Our Story

Representing over four generations of wine growers, we hope our personal touch can be felt from the soil to the glass. Family owned and operated, we were previously known as McGah Family Cellars but rebranded in 2015 in honor of our flagship wine, Scarlett, which is named after our founder’s daughter.

Before we were Scarlett Wines of Napa Valley, our family’s history in Northern California began over a century ago when E.W. McGah first put down roots in the San Francisco Bay area. He co-founded the Oakland Raiders football franchise in the 1960s, a proud legacy for which our family is still known today. E.W.’s stake in the Raiders was passed down to his son, E.J. “Eddie” McGah, in 1983. In fact, E.J. has a notable history in the sports world himself.
At age 17, E.J. made the cross-country trip from Oakland to Fenway Park and was signed by the Boston Red Sox. He continued his baseball career while serving in World War II and was one of the top five players nominated for the 14th District Naval MVP in 1945. After he was released from service in December 1945, he returned to the Boston Red Sox for two additional seasons and claimed a pennant title with the team in 1946.

Scarlett-Wines-Sherratt-ReicherSherratt Reicher, E.J.’s grandson and our founder, has carried on the family’s sports tradition. He was a defensive assistant and scout for the Raiders before leaving in 2002 to form the Hudson Companies, a diversified enterprise that includes Scarlett Wines and McGah Family Vineyards among its portfolio. Our family maintained our ownership in the Raiders until 2005, and we still take great pride in being part of a living legacy.

Today, Sherratt continues to oversee winemaking endeavors and infuses a strong sense of pride and tradition into every aspect of Scarlett Wines.

Our Winemaker

Scarlett-Wines-Mike-Smith

Mike Smith is an award-winning winemaker who started his career in 2001. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Mike worked each crush “free of charge” to learn and hone his craft. Fo

llowing his third harvest, Mike accepted a full-time assistant winemaker position from one of the Napa Valley’s most notable winemakers and moved his family to St. Helena. During this tenure, Mike worked with a vast array of wine labels including Maybach Family, Tamber Bey, and Rivers Marie. It was during this period that he developed his own philosophies on winemaking based on the strong foundation he built while working with these established labels.
Mike’s innate talent and purist methods have made him one of Napa Valley’s superstar winemakers. From the vineyards to the bottle, his hands-on approach and passion for wine are evident in the luxurious portfolio of wines he creates for Scarlett Wines along with his own label, Myriad Cellars.

Our Rutherford Estate

carlett-Wines-Rutherford Estate

Our vineyards are located in Rutherford, an appellation widely considered to be one of the premier sources of Napa Valley fruit. Purchased by E.J. McGah in 1990, the 65-acre vineyard continues is still owned and operated by our family today.

Our picturesque vineyard estates are nestled just north of Oakville and border the Silverado Trail, an area known for its unique terroir. Although Rutherford represents a relatively small appellation, its distinct microclimate and soils have made it home to some of the region’s most storied wineries. The soils from this upper east-side bench are a mix of red and brown gravelly loam with excellent drainage. The Rutherford AVA provides the perfect amount of heat to ripen both Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also provides the cooler evenings necessary for uniform ripening and full maturity at harvest.

We take great pride in that fact that wines produced with our ultra-premium Rutherford bench fruit have been awarded 100-point scores thanks to our first-class vineyard management team, impeccable farming practices, and quality control. Our personal touch is evident throughout our operation as we hand select grapes each year to ensure consistency vintage after vintage. We are committed to growing exceptional fruit that gives Napa its standout reputation as a wine-producing region.

We thank you for sharing in our family’s legacy and continuous journey in the wine industry and invite you to explore our history and wines further by visiting our website, here.
