Sauvignon Blanc and a Cheese Board
Just as important as the main dish (at least for us!) are appetizers, and there’s little we love more than a classic cheese and charcuterie board. We like to enjoy one before a big dinner, or treat it as a snack on New Year’s Eve. Softer, more briny and sour cheeses like Goat’s milk, blue cheese, and Crème fraîche, are best enjoyed with our 2018 Sauvignon Blanc because of its crisp, refreshing nature and substantial acidity.
However, artisanal cheeses such as cheddar, gouda, havarti, Monterey jack, and other alpine-style cheeses also make great accompaniments. You can bulk up your cheese board with vegetables or veggie-based bites, such as asparagus quiche or cucumber dill yogurt salad, that also pair beautifully with a glass of our Sauv Blanc.
Petite Sirah and Mixed Vegetables or Roast Pork
Our 2018 Petite Sirah is powerful, juicy, and expressive with notes of black plum, barrel spice, and a unique hint of soil infusion. When pairing with food, this wine is enhanced by rich, bold dishes and spices like allspice, cloves, cinnamon, chill pepper, and cocoa. Since every great holiday meal needs a vegetable dish to accent the main course (or, if you have a vegetarian in the mix), try combining this wine with sautéed mushrooms, eggplant, and caramelized onions or stuffed peppers. If you’re looking for a meat option, roast pork is a tasty choice.
Petit Verdot and Lamb Stew
Our 2018 Petit Verdot is a boisterous wine that’s layered with black cherry and blackberry flavors. Its perfectly ripe tannins lead to a round, dense mouthfeel that is sensual and bold, which requires a food pairing that can live up to the rigid tannin structure and concentrated nature of this varietal.
Foods with plenty of weight, protein, and fat are your best bet here, and we love a classic beef or lamb stew pairing. Other than the abundance of flavor, it’s a warm, hearty lunch or dinner choice on cold days!
Zinfandel and Glazed Hams
Most smoked hams are sold fully cooked, so one might wonder why it’s a good idea to bake them again. The answer is simple – to improve the texture and the ability to add a homemade glaze. In this case, we’ve found a unique dish made with Dr. Pepper and prunes for extra flavor, and we’re loving it!
This makes for a tasty Christmas dinner dish and goes well with our 2018 Scarlett Zinfandel. This medium-bodied Zin is well-balanced with great acidity and full of verve, and the hints of spice bring out the tangy characteristics of the glaze.
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Prime Rib
There are few more savory, melt-in-your-mouth pairings than a classic prime rib and our 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. The salt and fat of this dish cut through the tannin in the Cab, creating a smoother sensation on the palate.
Need the perfect side dish? Garlic mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts with bacon lardons are delicious options, as the fat and salt in the bacon accent the backbone of our classic Rutherford AVA Cabernet Sauvignon.
